The Food Pantry was started almost 20 years ago in the closet of First Christian Disciples of Christ Church.  The local grocery store and members from various churches stocked the pantry.  People that needed food were given what had been donated.DSC_0129

In 2009 when the Thrift Store opened, the food pantry began utilizing the back room.  The distribution of food was standardized and “orders” created. Each family receives certain items such as cereal, hamburger, etc and had the opportunity to choose other items.

The food pantry did not have an area for clients to wait and very limited storage.20160803_105459

In 2014 when the first phase of the Tucker Renewal Center was completed the food pantry moved to the first floor. This enabled the Food Pantry to have more freezers, refrigerators and professional shelves. The partnership with the Walmart distribution center flourished and we now are able to provide fresh produce in addition to staples, meat and bread.

Any extra donations are shared with the ABC backpack program, sponsored by the Optimist Club and Meals on Wheels.

Lots of volunteer hours go into providing food, drivers to pick up at Walmart, people to purchase food at Price Chopper, greeting clients, entering information into the computer and putting donated items onto shelves. The churches and local school groups and scouting organizations are also some of our biggest supporters.20160720_103032

The Food Pantry also participates in two national food drives, Stomp out Hunger with the Post Office and Souper Bowl Sunday with the churches competing for the most cans of soup donated.

On Thanksgiving Day, First Presbyterian Church of Pleasant Hill, offers a free Thanksgiving to anyone and will even deliver.

For Christmas the Food pantry assembles Christmas boxes. These contain everything a family will need to make a fresh holiday meal.  Extra support is requested from the community during this time for turkey and ham.
